Abstract

Abstract

While much of the emphasis of the "green" technologies has been focused on renewable and more efficient energy, some research has also been focused on conservation of natural resources such as water. The University of Leeds has done research that allows laundry washing machines to use only 10% of the water required by conventional washers. The technology uses pellets that, when coupled with a light spray of water and detergent, become "magnets" for dirt and grime. The pellets are reusable and last several hundred loads. The new technology also saves 30% of the energy required for traditional washers. It has attracted $3 million in public and venture capital funding. The first commercial washers using this technology should be out in a year.

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you believe that public universities should be allowed to benefit financially from their innovations? How about the researchers themselves?

  2. Does your opinion change on the above two questions if the university is private?

  3. How much do you believe the common customer would be willing to pay for such a washer?
